The Ontario Colleges strike!! The plot thickens, here’s what’s happening now:
Week 5 of this strike has now come to a close, on Thursday College Faculty rejected an offer made by the Colleges. That’s not really surprising, this was the offer that the Union OPSEU didn’t like, The Colleges forced a vote anyways, OPSEU told faculty to vote ‘no’ and that is exactly what happened.
The big bombshell was yesterday. Kathleen Wynne attempted to pass legislation that would force faculty back to work and bring the colleges and faculty into binding arbitration. Basically she is trying to force a deal to be made AND force students and profs back to school at the same time.
She needed unanimous approval to do this and the NDP kyboshed that legislation late last night. Their side of things is they don’t want to pass anything that they believe would take away workers rights. WITH THAT SAID… it’s not over. Most likely what will happen, is the Liberals will bring this move to the table again, the NDP will once again say ‘nope, not gunna happen’ at which point there will be a forced debate on the legislation. That will take us into the weekend, but it is absolutely possible, come Monday this legislation passes and faculty and students COULD be back to school next week.
