With fall just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to pick (and enjoy) some delicious apples. Tips to keep the apples you bring home fresh:
- Pick the right apples. The smaller the apple, and thicker the skin, the longer it will store.
- Handle them like eggs. If an apple has even a little bruise, ethylene gets emitted faster, and everything around it rots and spoils faster.
- Lower the temperature. Apples can (and should) be stored at super-low temperatures, ideally anywhere from 31 to 35 degrees.
- Add humidity. At the grocery store, fruit is misted regularly to add humidity and maintain freshness. You can recreate this at home by covering apples in a damp paper towel.
