Police have confirmed that after getting royal assent this year, new Ontario distracted driving laws will be coming into place on January 1st 2019. These changes to our laws come with a way more severe punishment that you should be aware of, so starting in the new year, if you are charged with distracted driving:
- First offence: 3 days suspension and $1,000 fine
- Second offence: 7 days suspension and $2,000 fine
- Three or more offences: 30 days suspension, $3,000 fine and six demerit points
It should be noted as well police will not be able to seize driver’s licences at the roadside. They will have to get judge approval in order to be able to suspend any driver’s licences.
